PRESS RELEASE

The Sustainable Development Goals as part of sustainable management in agriculture

  • Advancing in a consistent and structured way in the sustainability of the business is the commitment that forms the axis of the management of the Riopaila Castilla Group, to respond ethically to society as a productive, competitive and sustainable company, focused on the generation of shared value.
  • From the three dimensions of sustainability: economic, environmental and social, it develops projects aligned with the Global Sustainable Development Goals established by the UN, and to date its 9 sustainable practices are articulated with 10 of the goals.
  • For its part, Ideas Ingeniosas, a program to recognize workers for having made improvements in production processes focused on reducing losses, costs and optimizing resources, has implemented 27 ideas with a high economic and environmental impact, which generated a approximate savings of $1,000 MM in 2018.
  • On the other hand, and as one of the practices of the environmental dimension, the Riopaila Castilla Group is a cogenerator and marketer of clean and renewable energy that finds its main source of generation in biomass (cane bagasse).
  • Riopaila Energía, a subsidiary of the group, has a cogeneration capacity of 68 MWh. Its energy is intended to meet the internal consumption of its manufacturing operations (Non-Regulated users) and generation surpluses are marketed in bilateral contracts with other agents of the Wholesale Energy Market.
  • As part of the productive chain of the Riopaila Castilla Group, RioEn optimizes its operation in periods of drought, which means that the largest volume of generation is available when the National Dispatch Center (CND) needs it most, to meet the demand of the country, thus providing support and reliability to the National Interconnected System (SIN).
  • During 2019, the Riopaila Castilla Agroindustrial Group, through the Good Neighbor program that responds to the social dimension, has been developing actions as part of the deployment of its relationship strategy with the communities in its areas of operation (ZOS), already Throughout this year, 25 communities from the municipalities of Corinto, Miranda, Tuluá, Jamundí, Guachené, Padilla, La Victoria, Zarzal, Obando, Bugalagrande, Palmira, Florida, Pradera and Candelaria have intervened.
  • For his part, Luis Fernando Rendón, Specialist in Corporate Social Responsibility, assures that “The implementation of these actions that arise from a participatory construction process, and that respond directly to the needs and interests of the communities themselves, seeks to promote coordination mechanisms for the implementation of community initiatives from a co-responsibility perspective that allows advancing in the construction of a collective vision of development in the territories of the company's area of influence”.
  • Carlos Augusto Gómez Restrepo, Group Sustainability Manager… mentions that “we seek to act in harmony with the territories where we operate in our capacity as economic development actors, generate shared value with our stakeholders, within the framework of a management that respects national regulations, international sustainability agendas, human rights and the demands of the global market.
  • In this way, the company continues with its voluntary commitment to manage its businesses creating economic, environmental and social value, using natural resources efficiently, having a fluid dialogue with its stakeholders, and adopting practices aimed at generating shared value.
